2024 ELECTIONS

The emergence of ‘Progressive Paternalism’ and the rapidly shrinking Democratic Party base

Shawmut Strategies Group Founding Partner Chris Keohan appeared on NBC10 Boston's 'At Issue' (Starts at 7 minutes) on Sunday to discuss how NO prevailed on Massachusetts ballot questions 4 & 5. When asked to reflect on the 2024 elections, Keohan recalled a quote overheard from a frustrated proponent of one of the questions:

"Some people just don't know what's best for themselves."

Beyond their positions, many of which are still popular with voters, the progressive wing's insistance on candidates passing purity tests has successfully divided the historic base of the Democratic Party. The 'Blue Wall' has fallen twice in three attempts, with nearly every demographic shifting away from us. Voters are tired of being spoken to instead of heard while their everyday concerns go ignored.

If we want to build a winning coalition, we need to listen to voters and address the issues they care most about. Expanding on those thoughts, we're proud to share SSG's post-election analysis. In this article, Keohan calls for the return of 'Pragmatic Progressivism' to stop the emergence of 'Progressive Paternalism' in its tracks.
